Special note: Although I previously worked on this production as an assistant costume designer, wardrobe supervisor, and hair and makeup artist, the designs below are my theoretical concepts. This work, submitted to the Thespian Festival NJ Chapter competition, earned me a NJ Governor’s Award for Arts Education and NJ Thespian Festival Superior Award (Thespys). See “about” for more information.
Design Statement
When designing all the costumes, I had to take a wide range of variables into account. I wanted to find a look that expressed the character as an individual and as a whole group by using color and the cut. I kept as close to the script as possible to ensure the characters are as the script writer intended. This meant studying the background and behavior of each character, including their strengths, wants, and struggles that shaped their character and growth throughout the story. After researching the 90s fashion culture and the D&D world, I meshed the two to find a happy medium. This production was realized and our set was very colorful and busy, so I wanted to keep the color of the characters as organized as possible. I researched historical color associations and applied that to each role of the characters (purple is leadership, green is nature, etc). I then used this correlation to tie certain characters together depending on their relationship dynamic. I also created connections in the textile details and fabric types (leather, silk, etc.). With that, the overall theme of the chapters are fantasy and how we define certain mythical creatures in both color, style, and time period/setting. My main perspective was to think of these mythical creatures as kids playing dress up, using their own clothes and trending styles they may have seen in media when they were growing up, thus making them more human than mythical creatures.
